Welcome to Schedulosophy.
Try the following quick-check for schedule quality.
First, filter out summary, milestone and level of effort activities. Then, sort by total float, early finish and early start. Your project's most critical path should be displayed immediately and unambiguously at the top of your screen. Less critical paths should appear in succession as you scroll down the page. The display can be enhanced if you group by total float. If the most critical path is not readily produced in this manner, your schedule has some problems.
Many practices can interfere with the ability to display the most critical path using this quick-check. Two of the most common are hard constraints and the presence of more than one calendar for activities along the critical path.
Scroll to the bottom of the file. Very large total floats may indicate incomplete network logic.
The objective is to craft a schedule for which the recommended quick-check produces the project's most critical path immediately and unambiguously. Practices that interfere with this functionality degrade the fidelity of the schedule as a model of the project. Practices that facilitate this functionality enhance the fidelity of the schedule as a model of the project.
